regional airlines can recover from
COVID-19 impacts and the different
roles they can adopt; and 2) how
the regional sector can handle the
environmental sector. Dunnachie said
that, in a normal year, ATR aircraft
would open 100 new routes. In 2020,
84 were opened.

Sinead Cormican, head of leasing

perspective on operating leasing. The
Lessor CEO Panel was moderated by
Mark Streeter, managing director at JP
Morgan Securities Inc., and included
Peter Barrett, chief executive officer
of SMBC Aviation Capital; Patrick
Hannigan, chief commercial officer
of CDB Aviation; Ruth Kelly, chief
executive officer of Goshawk; Ryan
McKenna, chief executive officer of
Griffin Global Asset Management;
and Dómhnal Slattery, chief executive
officer of Avolon.
managing director at JP Morgan Securities Inc.; Wilhelm Steinmark, European head
of aviation lending and capital markets at Castlelake; and Chris Brooks, managing
director and co-head of global transport and logistics at Barclays Investment Bank.
Streeter said that, during the pandemic, investors considered lessor business
models sustainable and predicted that the share of leasing will grow.
The next panel, The Future Direction of Leasing, was moderated by Declan Kelly,
chairperson of Aircraft Leasing Ireland. Panelists were Jan Melgaard, executive
chairman of FPG Amentum Ltd.; Diarmuid Healy, head of technical asset management
at SMBC Aviation Capital; and Marie-Louise Kelly, chief financial officer at ORIX
Aviation. On the topic of sustainability, Melgaard said, " As a lessor community, it's
important that we are part of the solution. It's a paradigm shift. This industry is not
going to get to carbon neutrality unless all stakeholders are involved. "
Healy added that lessors have many roles they can play on the path to greater
sustainability. " As large suppliers of aircraft, we have an opportunity to get as much
standardization as we can into the product. Why can't all the avionics on an aircraft be
the same for all jurisdictions? We have this discussion a lot with the manufacturers.
We can also influence the waste we see around aircraft transitions, " he said.
Healy also addressed digitization of the lease process, saying that the pandemic
forced the industry to immediately shift to digital solutions, and regulators became
more accepting of the fact that they couldn't insist on paper records anymore.
For the Regional Aircraft Panel, Chris Beer, managing director of Skyworld,
moderated a panel of Mark Dunnachie, head of commercial - EMEA and Russia
Networking Events
There were many opportunities to
experience Edinburgh and meet with
other ISTAT EMEA participants at
this year's event. On Sunday, there
was a golf outing at Gleneagles and
a walking tour, as well as an ISTAT
Rising Executives Event and the
always popular Welcome Reception.
Monday and Tuesday evenings
were saved for networking, with the
ISTAT Women's Networking Reception
and the closing reception held at both
One Square Bar and the breathtaking
Edinburgh Castle, with shuttles
connecting the two venues.
Overall, this year's ISTAT EMEA
proved to be a much-needed
opportunity to reconnect and discuss
the future of the aviation industry
with peers.
