Day One
Tuesday, 11 October, began with a
workshop covering three topics. Dean
Gerber, executive vice president and
general counsel at Valkyrie BTO Aviation
Legal and ISTAT president led " How to
Structure an Operating Lease & Other
Developments in Lease Negotiations. "
After that, Brian Leonard, aviation
finance partner at PwC; Dominic
Gormley, senior tax adviser at PwC;
and Ross Duffy, senior tax associate
for aircraft leasing, banking and capital
markets at PwC held " Tax: Taxing Times
in Lease Negotiations & Tax Drivers in
Platform Jurisdiction Selection. " After
lunch, Gerry Butler, chief commercial
officer at CALC led " Commercial Q&A:
What We Did During COVID to Enhance
Relationships and Recessionary Worries. "
Tuesday also included an ST
Engineering freighter conversion tour,
" ISTAT Appraising - An Introduction, " an
ISTAT Rising Executives event and the
Opening Reception.
Day Two
The event's panels began on Wednesday,
12 October, with opening remarks from
ISTAT President Dean Gerber and ISTAT
Asia Co-Chair Marilyn Gan.
The first panel of the day was
" Aviation & ESG, " moderated by
Timothy Ross, head of investor relations
at BOC Aviation. The panel included
Shilpa Singhal, head of corporate
development and sustainability at BNP
Paribas; Matti Hautakangas, head
of sustainability for Asia-Pacific at
Neste; Hon Lung Chu, head of APAC
at Volocopter; and Rigel Cua, sales
director at Embraer.
The panel discussed infrastructure
investment, the role the airframe
manufacturer plays in reaching net
zero, how realistic sustainable aviation
fuel (SAF) targets are, how ESG ratings
are becoming relevant to investor
decisions, the future of aviation
propulsion options and more.
Following that panel was a Fireside
Chat with ISTAT President Gerber and
Peter Barrett, chief executive officer
of SMBC Aviation Capital. The two
discussed Barrett's role as CEO of
the same company for close to 20
years, the beginning of his aircraft
leasing career at GPA, and how he has
managed through uncertain times.
The Airline Panel was up next,
moderated by Adrian Dharsan, senior
vice president of commercial at
Genesis. Panelists included Danny Ta
Quang Ngoc, director of aircraft fleet
planning, acquisition and financing
at Vietjet Air; Mark Cezar, chief
financial officer at Cebu Pacific Air;
and Riyaz Peermohamed, chief aircraft
acquisition and financing officer at
Indigo. The panel spent a good deal of
time addressing audience questions,
such as " What untapped sources of
revenue are out there for you? " and
" Given the impending recessionary
concerns globally, how are the
panelists preparing for this potential
environment? Do you see the operating
environment becoming worse before it
gets better? "
The Airbus vs. Boeing debate
followed, which was moderated by
David Swan, chief operating officer at
SMBC Aviation Capital. On the Boeing
side was Tom Sanderson, director
of product marketing, and Sinead
Cormican, head of leasing customers,
represented Airbus. Sanderson walked
the audience through a market and
product update touting Boeing as
