(PWC), the
PW150
engine was
certified in 1998 by Transport Canada
(TCAA) and selected to power the
De-Havilland Dash 8-400 turboprop
aircraft, which seats 80 in typical
configuration. At 5,000 shaft horse
power (shp), it nearly doubled the 2,750
shp found on the earlier PW127 found
on the ATR72-500, which seats 72 in
typical configuration.
Fintech believe that approximately
1,450 PW150s have been delivered
in total. An attractive quality of the
engine is its " green " credentials,
as it produces up to 50% less CO2
emissions when compared to similar
sized regional jet engines. In addition,
the PW150 is currently certified to
operate using up to 50% blended

sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Having
recently completed the delivery of
11 Dash 8-400s, Fintech has had
substantial commercial and technical
exposure to the PW150.
In general, the PW150 has been
very reliable, with only two corrective
airworthiness directives issued by
TCAA. It has, however, suffered
from a number of operating issues.
The most notable incident was the
fatigue cracking of a No. 4 bearing
key washer in 2014, resulting in a
section of the washer being released
and migrating to the engine's oil pump.
Consequent mechanical failure of
the oil pump assembly restricted oil
flow, resulting in engine lubrication
failure, internal overheating and a fire,
which caused substantial pylon heat

required all operators to undergo an
extensive inspection and eventual

was typically, but not always, done
concurrently with a scheduled shop visit.
Market Review
With the PW150 being utilized solely on
the Dash 8-400 turboprop, its market
is wholly dependent upon the status
of that program, the dynamics of the
secondary market and the level of
support offered by PWC. In June 2021,
De-Havilland publicly announced that
the Dash 8-400 would be undergoing
a " production pause. " More recent
announcements by the Canadian OEM
indicate they are still assessing the
