MEMBERSOLUTIONS
if I have a problem I am trying to
solve. I have found new employees at
events designed for networking."
He further commented, "I think its
valuable to reach out other than when
you need help, oen I contact a
colleague because they just pop into
my head."
Terrell highlighted the openness he
encounters when approaching
colleagues in the training world:
"When talking with others in the
training profession, you quickly find
common challenges that others face
and even ideas for solutions."
Jerry Clor, senior manager,
market access training, UCB
Pharma, said, "Market access
demands staying current with the
ACA and other market nuances. e
Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy
(AMCP) is a key network outlet for
me, a network of experts, really
supports my efforts to stay current."
Kopald shared the value of
discussion boards on social media: "I
put out a question on LinkedIn and
received hundreds of responses and
made many new connections."
Drummond cited the benefit of the
different perspective a colleague can
put on an issue, saying, "e different
lens ultimately enables you to make a
better and more informed decision.
Topics such as structure and coaching
are examples of where my network has
added value".
Fifield highlighted the importance
of openness when tapping into his
network: "I seek to be approachable
and without a personal agenda. By
adopting the, 'what do I have to offer
stance,' I have found many ideas and
opportunities that I wouldn't have
necessarily pursued on my own."
Petee noted his network has
supported his professional growth. "I
have been advised of job opportunities
and gained endorsements for new
roles, and furthermore I tap into my
network for interviewing tips."
Paying It Forward
ose who excel at networking give
as much as they receive. Clor cited
the importance of being generous with
your time and expertise: "I work to
ensure my internal team shares
information, I run ad hoc sessions at
lunch for anyone who wants to know
more about managed care.
Additionally I coach grad students
who need help with the complexities
of healthcare reform."
Petee also shared the value in
ensuring you have established
mechanisms to network and develop
your own teams. "I have instituted a
peer review monthly development
session for my team. We spend one
aernoon a month sharing the latest

techniques and what's hot from our

Sharing the credit is a theme for
Fifield. "e key is to champion
peoples input and give credit where
credit is due, a collaborator is a
valuable learning and development
asset. Being an identifier and
promoter of great ideas is just as
valuable as having a great idea
yourself."
D'Amico further elaborated, "A
professional network is like any
relationship, it needs to be cultivated,
if you expect others to be willing to
assist you, you should reciprocate."
The Bottom Line
Kopald summed it up: "When you
are in LTEN, you are a member of a
network, and LTEN events are perfect
for networking. Everyone knows that
is part of the reason you are at the
event. at makes it easier to jump in
and share ideas."
Clor and Drummond emphasized
the effort required to get the most out
of your network.
"You have to work at this, you can't
count on serendipity," Clor stated. "I
put networking on my weekly to-do
list. A quick email or phone call
contributes to keeping the relationship
alive."
Drummond stated the bottom line:
"We all own our own development, so
we must own the networking
component as well." I
