TECHNOLOGY

Emerging Trends
and Social Media
I By Shaliya Khan

W

hile the last era was marked by rapid
adoption of the Internet, in this
current one we are seeing

unprecedented adoption of social media as a
way of life. Coupled with growth of smart
phones and personal devices, the corporate
adoption of social media in marketing, sales,
human resources and learning and
development is bringing about a set of radical
changes in the way organizations function.

e life sciences industry already uses social
media to research, communicate and influence
buying decisions, but the absence of clear
guidelines from the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) has kept the industry
skeptical. However, this situation has been
evolving fast. With the FDA releasing three
dra guidance documents in the recent past,
the life sciences industry is expecting to see the
final guidelines anytime soon.
Innovative organizations are building
applications and tools to leverage social
technologies that help not only their employees
but also enable other stakeholders to identify
value and opportunities. In the learning and
development function, social media powers
interactions with scale, speed and
collaboration.
Knowledge thus gathered can go deeper
than what is defined in manuals, with people
unlocking inputs from peers and communities
otherwise inaccessible. Freed from the
limitations of the functional and organizational
silos, social interaction empowers employees to

connect across geographies and time zones and
to multiply their influence beyond their
immediate circle.

A Rising Demand
Several forces are stimulating demand for
social media in the life sciences industry,
including escalating training costs and the need
for faster information dissemination. Social
technologies are also overcoming many of the
traditional obstacles of compiling, storing and
sharing information securely. In addition to
facilitating conversation and collaboration,
technological advances have made it easier to
tag data and retrieve it when necessary. e
content shared can readily remove information
that doesn't pass through compliance norms or
patient-confidentiality standards.
With new insights becoming easily available,
learning leaders have taken the opportunity to
build applications that make it easier to share
and analyze information. ese tools and
platforms are starting to improve efficiency of
training and reduce costs.
