2. Engage managers. Participant's managers can be
the greatest adjuncts to your leadership
development efforts or the greatest impediments. A
study at Pfizer found that when leader's managers
were actively engaged, leadership skills improved.
When they were not engaged, there was little or no
improvement aer the same program! Provide
managers with short, simple, effective things they
can do to reinforce learning.
3. Provide support. Changing habits is hard. What
seemed easy and clear in class oen becomes less
clear and much harder to execute in real-time
leadership. Be sure that participants have access to
performance support - job aids, peers, coaches,
experts - so that they are more willing to try new
approaches and more likely to succeed when
they do.
Leadership is the lifeblood of any organization.
Make sure your infusion of leadership skills flows all
the way through to on-the-job performance and
doesn't stop at the classroom door. I
