EMERGING LEADER Dana Bates, Gilead Sciences "Everything she manages is a 'Gilead first,' because she is creating her role on a daily basis." D ana Bates, one of the four life sciences professionals honored as an Emerging Leader in the LTEN Excellence Awards, is manager, managed markets, commercial learning & development for Gilead Sciences. Bates was nominated by Jeﬀ Draper, associate director, managed markets and operations, commercial learning & development, for Gilead. "Dana keeps a positive attitude at all times," Draper said. "is attitude allows her to gain commitment from stakeholders and move projects forward in order to make sure the project is completed on time. ese are qualities that will help Dana lead and support a team in the future." In nominating Bates for the LTEN honor, Draper highlighted three qualities that helps her succeed: * Leading with authority - Bates is very eﬀective at managing several layers of management to ensure decisions are made and implemented. * Being results-focused - Bates would oen step in and take over as needed to ensure projects are completed on time and with quality. * Being a problem-solver - She finds a way to solve problems by working through the organization to tie the appropriate resource to the right solution, Draper said. Bates recently completed onboarding, training and implementing a national meeting for a new team at Gilead, support path managers. is required two separate training classes for 18 support path managers and their leadership team. "What is even more impressive about Dana's success is that she volunteered to lead these initiatives, which were outside of her daily responsibilities," Draper said. "Overall, Dana had been a significant contributor to the department. Everything she manages is a 'Gilead first,' because she is creating her role on a daily basis," Draper said. "ese are the behaviors we look for in an emerging leader at Gilead and I have no doubt she will emerge as one." Of course, having the right attitude helps. "Dana has a very humble yet endearing quality which allows her to move through and with an organization even when faced with unfamiliar deliverables and resources," Draper said.
