FEATURESTORY Cloud-Based Collaborative Platforms ■ By Tom Johnson The cloud-based collaborative platform can better engage field employees. F or life sciences companies, collaboration always has been the essential ingredient for conducting business. e easier and more seamlessly employees can share information with one another, the more effective they can be. e larger and more geographically dispersed the enterprise, the greater the challenge of putting the appropriate systems and processes in place. e transition to a partner-centric model for the development of new drugs and therapies raises the stakes and the complexity of collaboration. How do parties align heterogeneous systems and processes to exchange documents and data? And how can sensitive information and intellectual property be protected from unauthorized access and distribution? If the solutions are too cumbersome, they will introduce vulnerabilities, fail to gather critical mass for adoption, hinder productivity or all of the above. Cloud-Based Collaboration What life sciences organizations - from manufacturers and CROs to investigators and academia - need to bring them together is a cloud-based collaborative platform. e cloudbased collaborative platform can be used internally within the enterprise to better engage field employees. It also can be used externally across enterprises to deploy a single system, a consistent set of processes and workflows, and a single source-of-truth for information storage, handling, and sharing. Picking a cloud-based collaborative platform that delivers on that promise requires an assessment across two vectors: security and functionality. For security, the cloud-based collaborative platform should include the following capabilities: * Single Sign-On - e platform should be able to engage with an identity and access management solution that allows individuals to use existing passwords or credentials. e more credentials users must maintain, the greater the potential for loss or compromise. * Multiple Tiers - All documents and data shouldn't be treated identically. e platform should require stronger credentials for environments where sensitive information is involved, to ensure protection and compliance with regulatory mandates. Higher tiers can incorporate sensitive document exchange policies and controls to further strengthen security. 28 FOCUS | WINTER 2015 | www.L-TEN.org http://www.L-TEN.org
