COVERSTORY
LTEN at 45: Community,
Clarity and Careers
■ By Tim Sosbe
The three C's Community,
Clarity and
Careers - are part
of the LTEN fabric.
C
hange can be a constant in the world of
training in general, and in the life
sciences industries in particular. But
fortunately, some things can remain true to a
strong central core. rough three different
names over its 45-year history, LTEN has
remained true to its central mission to support
life sciences sales training by creating
professional networks, building shared skills
and knowledge and enhancing professional
development.
ose three missions - the ree C's of
Community, Clarity and Careers - are part of
the LTEN fabric, and as we move toward the
half-century mark, the value of our network
continues to evolve around those focal points.
With this article and its companion pieces
from two former LTEN presidents,
we mark the 45th anniversary of
LTEN by focusing on the value
LTEN offers its members -
and more importantly, the
value LTEN members provide
to themselves
and one another.
For this
article, we asked six veteran members of LTEN
to share their thoughts on how the network has
impacted their careers and how other LTEN
colleagues can maximize their membership
experiences.
Greg Adamson is senior director of
education for St. Jude Medical, and first joined
LTEN in 2001, when he was a training manager
at Abbott.
"e first thing I think about is 'I wish I
would have joined earlier,' " Adamson said. "My
view of training and development has
completely changed as I have used best
practices from other training leaders to shape
my view of what 'good' looks like."

Glen Drummond, senior director of
commercial learning and development for
Depomed, also has enjoyed longtime access to
LTEN, first connecting with the network in the
early 1990s.
"I have watched the growth of this society
over the years, where it has expanded and
offered greater resources," Drummond said. "It
used to be just an annual meeting ... that's how
far LTEN has come!"
For Tim Kern, who leads North American
training for Pfizer, joining LTEN in 1998 was a
chance to tap into something more specific
than other training organizations.
"I have found LTEN to be a tremendous
resource over the years," Kern said. "I have
always appreciated the fact that we have an
industry-specific group. For me, it has provided
much greater utility than broader learning
societies, largely due to the nature of our go-tomarket models being so different than
consumer products."
He wasn't the only one to mention the
unique perspective of LTEN. Janet Koch,
director of classroom training for Purdue
Pharma and an LTEN member since 1999, felt
similarly.
