Focus Supplement 2 - Summer 2016 - 4

FROM THE PRESIDENT Mary Myers Challenging the Status Quo Our winners have each stumbled onto something original. T his year's 45th LTEN Annual Conference was a rousing - and record-breaking - success, with 827 attendees coming together as colleagues and friends with a shared mission and singular vision to use training, education and development to create opportunities for our learners, our companies and ourselves. I could speak volumes on the success of the conference, but in this special digital issue of Focus, the spotlight is rightfully on the winners and finalists of the 2nd Annual LTEN Excellence Awards. is year's winners and runners-up truly reflected the best and brightest work in life sciences training, the cream of a very productive crop. In my career, I've observed that those who stand out are considered non-conformists, people who are not afraid to speak up or challenge "the way things have always been done." Adam Grant, an author and professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, calls these types of people "originals," using the term to describe creative thinkers who drive change and champion new ideas. Each of this year's winners and finalists have been recognized for their innovative solutions, their original ideas and for their ability to doubt their own ideas, test their theories, refine their solution and then implement change. ey're role models, in other words, for the type of trainers we all should be. Our 2016 LTEN Excellence Awards winners have each stumbled onto something original. ey loved the problem, not a single solution. ey will be remembered not for any bad ideas or failures, but for their exceptional solutions. ose solutions, of course, generate more ideas. It's the start of a cycle of success with no end - literal or figurative - in sight. I had the pleasure of opening the conference this year, escorted in by a George Washington lookalike, a fitting entrance for a conference near our nation's capital. However, it was another president, John Quincy Adams, who I think captured the spirit of what we do best, when he said, "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." I invite you now to get ready to start flipping the pages of this e-magazine to meet some true leaders in our industry. Over these pages, we'll introduce you to the award-worthy work of: * 9 winners of competitive LTEN Excellence Awards, selected from 50 nominees by a large panel of industry expert judges. * 5 winners of the inaugural LTEN Members of the Year categories, representing both primary market companies and our industry partners in the supplier community. * 22 finalists, each of whom was worthy of winning themselves in what turned out to be a very competitive race. * 2 very special gentlemen, whom we were honored to posthumously select for inclusion in the LTEN Hall of Fame. I hope you find their stories inspirational and that they help serve as guideposts as you innovate your own training solutions. Challenging the status quo is a must for successful trainers, and this year's exceptional performers certainly took that mission to new heights. Congratulations to all of this year's LTEN Excellence Award winners, finalists and nominees. ■ Mary Myers is president of LTEN and director of training for Bayer HealthCare.
