NAMSS Changes Eligibility Requirements
for Certification

A

fter much discussion and
deliberation, the Certification
Commission of NAMSS is changing
the eligibility criteria for the CPCS and
CPMSM exams.
First, for the CPCS exam, the eligibility
criteria will be as follows: At the time
of application, the candidate must be
currently employed in the medical
services profession for at least the past
12 consecutive months and have a total
of three years' experience in the medical
services profession within the past
five years.
The Certification Commission has removed
the following from the CPCS examination
eligibility criteria: Be a CPMSM in good
standing and be employed for at least
the past 12 consecutive months in the
medical services profession. This criterion

was removed because a CPMSM in good
standing would automatically qualify for
the CPCS examination under the new
CPMSM criteria.

12 consecutive months and have a total
of five years' experience in the medical
services profession within the past
eight years.

The CPMSM examination focus is one of
leading, directing, and managing in the
medical services profession. Statistical
evidence has shown that approximately
90% of CPMSM examination candidates
with less than five years' experience
in the medical services profession fail
the CPMSM examination. Therefore,
a decision was made to change the
eligibility criteria for both the CPCS and
CPMSM examinations.

The following CPMSM eligibility criterion
is being eliminated: Be a CPCS in good
standing and be employed for at least the
past 12 consecutive months in the medical
services profession.

The CPMSM examination eligibility
criteria will be as follows: At the time
of application, the candidate must be
currently employed in the medical
service profession for at least the past

The changes to the eligibility criteria will
be effective for applicants testing in the
Fall 2015 testing window. The NAMSS
Board was notified of the change at their
October 2014 Board meeting.
If you have questions, please feel free
to reach out to Ropizah Ervin, Test
Development Chair or Heidi Thompson,
CCN Chair. ■
