A New Role, a New

elcome to this first edition of
SYNERGY in 2015! I take note of
the year because it was 15 years
ago this January that I took a huge leap forward
in my MSP career, and now I am writing this
article as SYNERGY's new editor and as your
association's President-Elect. Thank you for
this opportunity to serve my peers.
As I was reflecting on these new roles and
responsibilities, I realized that my career
as an MSP, and most certainly my various
opportunities to contribute to NAMSS over
the years, would have taken a very different
track if I had not been open to a significant
prospect presented to me in 2000. Y2K had
come and gone without any fanfare (despite
the hours of preparation my hospital went
through just in case the world went dark!)
when I took a call from Carol Ostermann,
the Chair of the Certification Board of
NAMSS. She was searching for a new
appointee to the Certification Board and
had remembered a complaint letter I wrote
to the board and subsequent conversation
we had a few months earlier. Carol's words
to me were something along the lines
of, "Someone with your passion for our
profession and ability to share your informed
opinion simply must get more involved!"
I truly wondered what she saw in me that
I didn't feel was there, but I trusted this
NAMSS leader to guide me. So, I took the
invitation from Carol to get involved. I saw
the new role as a substantial challenge
because anything new or different meant
change to me at the time, and change was
hard. But more importantly, contributing
is a part of my core, so the challenge of
change had to be accepted, and it truly
now feels like "my calling." Not that I am
special or divine in any manner, simply that
the opportunity to serve in my profession
satisfies my need to give back, pay forward,
contribute, volunteer.
NAMSS exists because of willing volunteers.
State associations couldn't possibly exist

without dedicated volunteer MSPs, and
many of our paying positions exist because
of the need to support volunteer physician
leaders. The desire to contribute, or be a
part of something larger than myself, was
a gift my parents gave me when I was
very young.
I was born in Denver, and my family lived
a modest life. My father worked hard to
ensure his family was safe, happy, and
healthy, but he often said we have an
obligation to share with others as we might
have needs someday ourselves. Whether
through church, coaching at the YMCA, or
even through his military services, those
were the commitments he felt obligated
to and honored by. Both of my parents
came from families where military service
played a role. My mother's life lesson to
her children was, "Be self-sufficient, never
rely on someone else for your wellbeing or
your happiness." Believe it or not, it was my
mother who was supportive when I decided
to join the Marine Corps at age 20, because
she wanted my life to be purposeful.
Let's just say that military boot camp was
definitely a change, a challenge, and
eventually a great opportunity to serve.
The first book my father ever gave me as a
gift was Carl Sandburg's "Abraham Lincoln,
the Prairie Years and the War Years." I loved
that story and still keep the book on my
desk. My father would say, "Mr. Lincoln
was also just a humble man who wanted
to contribute to the greater good of man."
Another favorite of my father's that he
taught me to also appreciate is a quote by
William Arthur Ward: "We must be silent
before we can listen. We must listen before
we can learn. We must learn before we can
prepare. We must prepare before we can
serve. We must serve before we can lead."
My father would take each phrase literally
and would recite the most applicable one in
many situations. I, too, think that this quote
