a WorD about DEfinitions While the digital edition industry is still young, an important delineation among vendors has occurred: one which was critical to our development of this study. There are two types of digital publishing vendors: self service and full service. self service vendors – These vendors offer a technology platform to publishers but the work required to produce the actual digital edition is done by the publishers themselves. While these companies may offer similar technologies as full service companies, their business model tends to dictate less of an emphasis on service. As such, there is usually limited training in areas of circulation or revenue generation. A full services vendors – As the name implies, full service providers do the heavy lifting when it comes to digital publishing. Generally speaking, publishers provide the vendor with the PDF and the digital edition is produced in many different formats. Many full service vendors provide publishers with additional training to ensure their success with the platform. Not surprisingly, this more labor intensive business model comes at a higher price.
