I’ve already done the shit jobs: picking out pubic hairs from motel bathtubs, selling marked-down bras and girdles to jumbo-size women, working overtime for coke fiends who used the business of documentary film production for cover. What interests me is that Agnes sought out situations of solitude without letting society shame her. She had a mother and a father in Saskatchewan who must have dreamed of a different life for her—don’t parents want their children to marry and make grandchildren? But she was unaffected by their, or anyone else’s, desire. Her work bears no trace of outside influence— and yet while so many people grow sad with age, the older Agnes became, the more her happiness grew. She was able to cultivate an untroubled mind, and isn’t that what we both want? When I’m not in town comparing her site-specific paintings with an afternoon framed by skylight, I can be infusing your house with serenity and daydreams. Or maybe your estate is in the Hudson Valley, not Agnes’s terrain, but a radiant place that would suit me fine. What I seek is the hum of your house; let me love it for you in your absence. Are you a collector? I’m not promising that I’ll dust off your bookshelves, but your first editions will be enriched by my close reading. While you are anchored off the coast of Portofino, I can be harvesting your heirloom apples. You won’t return to find a freezer filled with homemade strudel, but perhaps this year the deer Warning : Unknown : The session id contains invalid characters, valid characters are only a-z, A-Z and 0-9 in Unknown on line 0 Warning : Unknown : Failed to write session data files .
