About the Authors
Marsha Levick, Deputy Director and Chief Counsel, co-founded Juvenile Law
Center in 1975 and oversees the Juvenile Law Center's litigation and appellate
docket. She has successfully litigated challenges to unlawful and harmful laws,
policies and practices on behalf of children in both the juvenile justice and child
welfare systems. Levick also spearheaded Juvenile Law Center's litigation arising out of the Luzerne County, Pennsylvania juvenile court judges' corruption
scandal, known as the "kids for cash" scandal. Levick co-authored the lead
child advocates' amicus briefs in key recent United States Supreme Court cases,
including Roper v. Simmons (juvenile death penalty unconstitutional under
the Eighth Amendment); Graham v. Florida (life without parole sentences for
juveniles convicted of non-homicide offenses unconstitutional under the Eighth
Amendment); J.D.B. v North Carolina ( a juvenile's age is relevant to the Miranda custody analysis under
the Fifth Amendment); and Miller v. Alabama (mandatory sentences of life without parole for juveniles
convicted of homicide offenses unconstitutional under the Eighth Amendment). Levick was also co-counsel
for Henry Montgomery in Montgomery v. Louisiana, where the United States Supreme Court ruled Miller
v. Alabama reroactive. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University School of Law,
Levick is currently an adjunct faculty at both Penn and Temple Law Schools.
Joanna Visser Adjoian is Co-founder and Co-Director of the Youth Sentencing
& Reentry Project (YSRP). Prior to YSRP, Joanna served as Associate Director and
Staff Attorney of the Toll Public Interest Center at the University of Pennsylvania
Law School, Penn Law Postgraduate Fellow at Juvenile Law Center, federal law
clerk in the United States District Court of the District of New Jersey, and family
law paralegal at Philadelphia Legal Assistance. Joanna is a 2014 Echoing Green
Fellow and a 2016 Claneil Emerging Leader Fellow. She chairs the Philadelphia
Bar Association Public Interest Section's Legal Rights of Children Committee,
and serves as a member of the Toll Public Interest Center Advisory Board.
Joanna received both her undergraduate and law degrees from the University
of Pennsylvania.
Lauren Fine, Esq., is the co-founder and Co-Director of the Youth Sentencing &
Reentry Project (YSRP). Before YSRP, Lauren was a Zubrow Fellow in Children's
Law at Juvenile Law Center, a federal law clerk, and a research assistant/project
manager at the Brookings Institution. At Juvenile Law Center, among other
projects, Lauren co-authoredAmicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court and state
supreme courts on juvenile life without parole sentences, aided in successfully
challenging the adjudication of homicide for an 11 year old; provided legal
intake services at a homeless shelter for youth, and co-authored a Model Act
and reports on juvenile record expungement and on trauma and resilience.
She is a 2014 Echoing Green Fellow, a 2015 American Express-Ashoka Emerging
Innovator, a 2016 Claneil Emerging Leader Fellow, a 2016 American Bar
Association Lawyer on the Rise, a TEDx speaker and has appeared on NPR. A volunteer with Big Brothers,
Big Sisters and the Pennsylvania Coalition for the Fair Sentencing of Youth, Lauren is a graduate of Yale
University and Duke University School of Law.
