un fact: did you know that PACDL is
pronounced "P-A-C-D-L" as opposed to
"pack-dull"? This was ingrained in me by
one of our Founding Fathers, Arthur T. Donato,
whom I have previously referred to as PACDL's
George Washington. He gets a kick out of that.
(Not really.)
Over thirty years ago, Art was part of a small
group of dedicated criminal defense lawyers
who envisioned a vibrant statewide association
supporting its members as they undertook
the important work of representing criminal
defendants. Through the hard work of our
members, that vision has been realized, even
beyond that small group's wildest dreams.
That work, which I have been involved with
myself for over twenty years, continues
today and contributes to PACDL's substantial
accomplishment and achievements.
PACDL accomplishes its work through its
committees. Serving on one of our committees
is a great way to become more involved with
PACDL. This service can also be a springboard,
if you choose, for consideration to serve on
our Board of Directors and, ultimately, other
leadership positions on the Executive Committee.
Each committee has a specific purpose.
Committee meetings occur primarily via
conference calls or, perhaps, at a conference or

seminar. Time commitment is generally between
two and five hours per month. Below is a
description of some of our committees where
you can share your talents with PACDL and meet
and network with talented practitioners across
the Commonwealth. Feel free to contact me,
Beth Winters, or the committee chair to express
interest.
The Advocacy Committee advances PACDL's
legislative and public policy goals and fosters
support across legislative and regulatory
channels by drafting position papers and
testimony. Members with an aptitude in
legislative process and relationships with
legislators and legislative staff are sought here.
This committee is co-chaired by Laurel Gift and
Petra Gross.
The Amicus Committee advances PACDL's
judicial advocacy goals and the Association's
policies and agenda by reviewing all
applications for amicus briefs proposed to
be filed in the name of PACDL, identifying
individuals to draft briefs, and making
recommendations to the Board of Directors
as to final approval of filing. The Amicus
Committee performs amazing appellate
advocacy and has substantially raised PACDL's
profile as a highly regarded and sought-after
amicus curiae in our state and federal courts.
This committee is chaired by Barbara Zemlock.
