o matter how hard you fight, very often
the facts and the law are against you
and you and your client both need to
accept a result that includes state incarceration.
What practical advice can you give your clients
who are about to enter the Pennsylvania
Department of Corrections? [Pa. DOC]. This
article tries to provide some pointers to help
your clients get ready for their stay in a Pa.

First, advise your clients not to bring
anything with them when they enter as
it will be confiscated and stored. Clients
will have to buy their TV's, radios, tablets,
books, etc., from approved vendors, to
address security concerns. Inmates can order
these items through the mail. Books must
come from the publisher.
Each new inmate will be given an inmate
handbook which will explain the grievance

your client to review it carefully.

Each inmate can keep two boxes of property
in the cell and more can be placed in a
storage facility. Money will be kept in each
inmate's account. Pay and money from
home is subject to a 20% taking per Act 84
for fines, costs and restitution. Each inmate
is entitled to a fair hearing via the grievance
process to contest this amount. The
commissary will provide the usual amenities
at fairly reasonable prices.

Almost all cells are double occupancy due to
overcrowding. Inmates will be given some
discretion in picking a cellmate.

Most inmates are required to work, even
if a menial do-nothing job. Pay starts
at 17 cents an hour. Industry jobs pay
considerably more, but they are rare and
only in facilities that have correctional
