to the PA BLE, authored by PACDL President Peter
E. Kratsa and NexGen Committee Chairperson
Caroline G. Donato, recommending that, if the
2020 Bar Exam remains a requirement to enter
the practice of law in the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania, then the PA BLE should be conducted
remotely in lieu of postponing the exam for a year.
Although initially declined, the PA BLE ultimately
adopted this recommendation.

The future for NexGen is promising. The NexGen
Committee will close out the year with a final
Mental Health Series Webinar, building off of
the Haworth Series, jointly hosted by forensic
and clinical psychologists Dr. Elliot Atkins and Dr.
Thomas F. Haworth. This engaging virtual forum
will address the current state of our psychological
affairs and help PACDL membership develop new
tools to succeed.

Encouraged by the Committee, NexGen members
also individually took the initiative to submit
articles to For the Defense, present a virtual CLE
webinar, and transition into new leadership roles.
In For the Defense, Carolyn H. Kendall authored
" Confronting the New Reality: Protecting Your
Client's Right to Confront Witnesses During the
COVID-19 Era " , and Ashley E. Shapiro authored
" A Primer and Practitioner's Perspective on
Pretrial Release and Detention in Federal Court in
Pennsylvania " and co-authored " Warning: State
Attorneys General Investigations Increasing Due
to COVID-19. " Committee member Syzane Arifaj
presented PACDL CLE webinar " Compassionate
Release - Overcoming the Barriers and Challenges. "
Caroline G. Donato and Ashley E. Shapiro were
elected to the PACDL Board of Directors in October.

As the Committee continues to adapt, strengthen
and grow even when faced with the personal and
professional challenges marked by 2020, there is
no question that the NexGen Committee has a
bright future. This future is a testament to the
commitment of the Committee members, who work
tirelessly together to make a difference in PACDL
and the legal profession. The NexGen Committee is
always looking to grow its membership and attract
new talent. PACDL members, who are interesting
in identifying and implementing networking
opportunities among other new lawyers within
the organization, launching meaningful projects,
and recruiting lawyers to join the Association,
should immediately contact our Executive Director
and join the NexGen Committee. We look forward
to working together in 2021.
