REMEMBERING
RUTH BADER GINSBURG

S
he loved opera.
As much as Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg cherished
her life in the law, she found the beauty, complexity,
and majesty of opera something to be embraced and
adored. In fact, given the insular world surrounding
the Supreme Court, public sightings of Justice Ginsburg
were much more likely to occur at the Kennedy Center
(where " she was a frequent attendee of Washington
National Opera events, " 1) than at the Court itself
(although she often attended with her dear friend, and
polar-opposite fellow justice, Antonin Scalia).
This should not come as a surprise. Amidst the
flourish, color, lyric and volume, at its core opera is

most essentially about the human story. At her core,
Ruth Bader Ginsburg embraced that same human story
throughout her life, as a student, professor, advocate,
judge and ultimately, as Associate Justice of the
Supreme Court.
And essential to that embrace was her understanding
of the place of women in that story.
As a student, Ruth Ginsburg was treated to a series
of " 'indignities' that Harvard [Law School] imposed
on women [which] led her to spend much of her
career fighting to break down legal barriers to the
advancement of women in society. " 2 Among these
was an inquiry by the law school's dean asking her " to
justify taking a place in the class that otherwise would
