For the Defense - Vol. 6, Issue 2 - 4

OPENING
STATEMENT
Peter E. Kratsa, PACDL President
W
ith apologies to William Shakespeare, now
has passed the winter of our discontent. As
I have shared with you previously, PACDL
has weathered this past difficult year, adapted, and
continues to be available as a valuable resource to you.
We held our Annual Conference virtually this past
April. While there is no substitute for the camaraderie of
in-person conferences, I would like to acknowledge the
outstanding efforts of our speakers, and the Education
Committee, led by the indefatigable Philip Gelso,
who undoubtedly continues to say the phrase " Survey
Monkey " in his sleep (to the extent he sleeps at all).
Quality content was shared over three days, including
our annual Capital Case Track as well as twelve hours of
seminars relevant and timely to the practice of criminal
defense in Pennsylvania.
Additionally, we held PACDL's Annual Meeting virtually
on April 8, during which our current slate of Officers
was elected by acclimation, in accordance with our
Bylaws: President Peter Kratsa, President-Elect Patrick
Casey, Eastern District Vice President Brian McMonagle,
Middle District Vice President Jason Dunkle, Western
District Vice President Jonathan Fodi, Secretary Edward
Spreha, and Treasurer Wana Saadzoi. Board Members
were also elected by acclimation: David Erhard, Nicole
Sloane, and William Winning are returning members
and newly elected are John Abom, Jonathan Fodi, and
Lisa Mantella. I look forward to the day when we can
all meet somewhere other than a computer screen,
meanwhile we will continue to work to maximize
PACDL's impact as an advocate for, and asset to, you.
Our Annual Awards were also given at the meeting
and I would like to memorialize those awards here.
4 For The Defense l Vol. 6, Issue 2
Feel free to peruse our website for a description of
the individual awards. The Liberty Award went to
The Atlantic Center for Capital Representation, Marc
Bookman, Executive Director. The Charles P. Gelso
President's Award was given to Mark Sheppard.
The Alan Jay Josel Advocacy Award went to David
Rudovsky and Leonard Sosnov. And, President's and
Directors' Commendations were given to Philip Gelso,
Michael Winters, Wana Saadzoi, and Heather Mattes.
I am proud to be part of an organization which
recognizes the valuable and selfless work each of
these organizations and individuals do for the citizens
of our Commonwealth.
Our committees continue to advocate for the
achievement of justice and dignity for defense lawyers,
criminal defendants, and the criminal justice system.
Our Amicus, Advocacy and Platform Committees have
been particularly active and effective in this effort.
Remember please, there is always an opportunity for
you to become more active in PACDL by volunteering
to join a committee, which will provide you with an
opportunity to rub elbows with the best and the
brightest defense lawyers in Pennsylvania.
CLE's in May included a thorough state and federal
Brady primer by Michael Engle and Brian Heberlig
and the first in a series of Past Presidents seminars by
Gary Asteak, Sara Webster, and Phil Gelso on postMcClelland
Preliminary Hearing strategies. We very
much hope to be back in-person for CLE's soon and are
planning for our annual White Collar Seminar slated
for November 11 and 12 to be held in person at the
Ritz Carlton in Philadelphia.

We wish you all a healthy and enjoyable summer.
Take a vacation, you earned it.
