Taming the Impostor Inside the High-Achiever
While there are certainly negative consequences
of impostor phenomenon, reframing the associated
positive attributes of this self-view is a first step
in combatting this experience. Like most

thoughts have negatively impacted your life, your career,
and ultimately your happiness or life satisfaction. Make
note of those things in your journal. Ask if you are being
fair to yourself and sincerely evaluate that question. Next,
take stock of your accomplishments and achievements
and write them down. What have you done to get where
you are? What goals have you achieved along the
way? Whenever you accomplish a new task
or attain success, write these down in
the same place in your journal. Then,
read these entries often, at least
once a week if not more often.

we must bring these positive
thoughts to our awareness
and get comfortable with
self-praise.

precursor to high achievement. However, these
expectations must be managed realistically so that they

ability to empathize with others and show compassion to

who experience impostor feelings are often people with
higher levels of empathy, who have a cooperative nature,

to achieve; the pain of your anxiety may be creating an
ability to sympathize with and support others.
How to Combat the Impostor Phenomenon
If you recognize these signs and symptoms of the
impostor phenomenon in yourself, there are ways to

the way we view ourselves. First, challenge and restructure
any thoughts that result in negative emotional states.
As an example, if you equate perfection or omniscience
with competence or skill, you are setting an unrealistic
