This annual discussion with the industry’s primary consultants continues to be one of our mostanticipated feature articles, and we’re happy to again provide you with their words of wisdom. As many of you know, however, we can’t always fit every one of those nuggets of information into our pages – alas, some things just don’t make the cut. Fortunately, though, I happen to “own” this space in each issue, and can share with you some of the words from the cutting-room floor: • Tim Greene, InfoTrends, on commercial printers looking at adding wide-format to their product mix: “They’re looking at markets that are adjacent and they think, ‘We do print work for many companies that also buy wide format – why don’t we o er that?’ So, to gain a greater share of their customers’ print spend, they enter wide format, either by acquiring a company that does it or by investing in the equipment themselves.” • Dan Marx, SGIA, on Toshiba’s aborted National No-Print Day earlier this year: “I think the biggest question for “print” – and in this case I mean the commercial printers of the world – is, what is their plan? What will they become as the Internet and social-media market explode? How do they stay relevant? One fascinating figure that came out of a recent SGIA survey was that zero percent of our respondents now use direct mail to attract new customers. This is a true paradigm shift in the industry.” • Marco Boer, I.T. Strategies, on the print industry’s use of tablets: “Tablets, no doubt, will come to pervade businesses as businesses also become nomadic consumers of electronic information. We’ll never be untethered. I think the trend to watch is not the tablet hardware, but rather the control of the operating systems of the tablets in business applications – it may well not be Apple or Microsoft.” • Peter Mayhew, LightWords Ltd., also on Toshiba’s idea for a National No-Print Day: “To quote the well-known fictional character Homer Simpson, “D’oh!” • Tim Greene, again, this time on Drupa: “Of course, many companies wait for Drupa to launch their most important products and some of these were launched at Drupa in the wide-format sector.
