insight by Gregory Sharpless www.bigpicture.net EDITORIAL Gregory Sharpless Bidding a Fond Farewell At a recent industry press junket in Vancouver, I faced my fear of heights, held in check my vertigo, and strode across the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Measuring nearly 500 feet across, the bridge hangs - and swings - more than 200 feet above Canada's Capilano River. Yes, I admit to being a bit non-plussed when a trio of giggling tweens rushed by me as I made my way back across the bridge. But I was quite pleased with myself: I had not only traversed the bridge once, but I had done it twice, making the roundtrip. And, bolstering my pride, our shuttle driver indicated that, some time ago, a woman had made it only one way across the bridge. She couldn't get the nerve up to re-cross the span and had to be ﬂown out by helicopter. No helicopter escort for me. Heck, I even got a nice little certiﬁcate out of the deal stating I had indeed "survived" the crossing. In retrospect, taking that ﬁrst step onto the bridge was the most diﬃcult part of the experience. Once I had made the decision to go, the rest of the journey kind of fell into place. This month, I'm taking another journey: This will be my last issue of editing The Big Picture magazine. I'm moving onto diﬀerent-colored pastures, serving as editorial director for a b2b content-providing company whose various brands do not cover the wide-format print market. I've been editing this publication since late 2003 - with the exception of about a halfdozen issues in which we had someone else give it a go for a while (can't recall just why) - and I've always enjoyed it. In addition, I edited one of our competitors for ﬁve years back in the day. A couple of things have particularly stood out to me in this industry: * One, the "craftsmanship" of the jobs and projects that you all churn out - some truly amazing stuﬀ! I'm always intrigued with what you're capable of producing (and, of course, the speciﬁcs of how you do it). * Two, the friendliness of the people who make up the marketplace - those in the shops, the manufacturers/suppliers, the communications folk we deal with on a daily basis, and others. I vividly remember when I was just getting to know the industry and how everyone I talked to was willing to share information. So this, my ﬁnal editor's note for The Big Picture, is my long-winded way of saying thanks for allowing me to cover this marketplace, and for taking the time to answer my e-mails, phone calls, and questions at tradeshows, conferences, and the like. I've always believed that by sharing information we become a stronger industry. And allow me to bid you this fond farewell: May your prints always be quickly dry, your colors always well-matched, and your proﬁts always nicely robust.
