just announced that the paper recovery
rate just hit a high of 68.1%, with a goal to
reach 70% by 2020.  No other packaging
raw material can come close to those
numbers.
More trees than when we started?
Tell me how paperboard is NOT sustainable?  It beats plastics hands down.

Pollution

When we think about sustainability, we need to see the Earth as a closed
system, nothing new gets in and nothing
old gets out.  There are as many carbon
molecules on this planet as there were 200
million years ago.  The difference now is
that we have released epic levels of carbon
into the atmosphere and the Earth is getting warmer, glaciers and the ice caps are
melting, seawaters are rising.  Very soon,
they will be planting crops in Greenland
where the ice shelf once resided.
Some day fossil fuels will be less
available, causing fuel prices to go up and
up, until we run out.
We need to be more savvy about our
raw material choices and the manufacturing workflows that run our packaging.
Every printer in North America should be
investing in both renewable energy credits
and carbon offset credits.  We will NEVER
push coal off the grid unless we first push
renewable onto the grid.  Wind Turbines
and Solar Farms have huge capital outlays

and REC's and COC's provide the seed
money to invest in such technologies.
They create jobs and slash the need for
shale oil production, drilling in the Artic.
Why would we continue to accept the fact
that our hunger for printed packaging is
fed by fossil fuels?  You can demand that
your packaging be created by sustainable
energy powered plants.  If you do, your
printer will comply.  Simply demand that
your packaging be carbon neutral and
sustainably powered.
It's ironic that my company invested
in renewable energy over ten years ago.
Only a handful of companies adopted the
use of the renewable windmill on their
packages because they couldn't guarantee that their other suppliers would do
so. Why not push all of your suppliers to
qualify for use of the windmill logo?
And why wouldn't you design your
packaging in paperboard, recycled or
virgin?
No raw material is as neutral to the

environment, and it is more disposable
than plastics.  There are a myriad of
recycled and specialty options as well.
Consider this about paperboard:
} Between 2005 and 2015, US forests
grew by the amount of 2,740 NFL football
fields every single day? That's about 1.3
million acres of forest growth a year.
} The United States grows more trees
than it harvests each year, making trees a
sustainable crop.
} In fact be proud of the fact that there
are 20 percent more trees growing in the
United States today than there were on
the first Earth Day celebration in 1970.
} Papermaking is not a cause of forest
loss in North America.  The US papermaking industry is by far the best steward of
our forests, far surpassing the efforts of
even our government.
Let's talk about recycling.  In North
America, paper and paperboard are recycled more than any other commodity.  The
American Forest and Paper Association

How about pollution? Every time we
introduce bad stuff into our environment,
it leaves an indelible mark on other
resources, impacting the sustainability
of things far beyond the scope of our baseline raw material focus.  Our behaviors
flow into areas far beyond our original
scope or intent.  The choices of raw materials, coatings, metallic inks, stampings,
all contribute to straining our natural
resources in so many ways, impacting the
sustainability of resources outside our
design scope.
A decision as simple as using transfer
foil, versus using a metalized polymer
laminate on a box or card makes a difference. Transfer foil only affixes the vacuum
metallization and a coating to the surface
of the paperboard, eliminating the plastic
film carrier in the sandwich of the package material.  As the board decomposes,
the metallization simply breaks down into
an inert powder of aluminum dust versus
a plastic film that will last until a time
long after we are all gone.  Ask the hard
questions of your printer.
We have choices.  We need to understand them.  Brand Managers hold the
key to a more environmentally friendly,
sustainable future.  Design with a firm
vision of what you want your environmental footprint to be.  Our industry
will support and follow your competent
leadership.   But somebody has to lead.
We hear everyone shouting at the
rain.  The consumers demand action.
Who will be brave enough to answer the
call?
