strains, including Pink Panties, Sunset Sherbert and the Gelato
line, which includes Bacio, Mochi, Acai berry and Gello, and
to experience the local heritage of the west coast cannabis
culture and Los Angeles' creative scene.
"We're signing a bunch of different bands and working
deals with artists," Jordan explains. "It's so fun! I get to use my
licensing experience and my package design experience."
Packaging that attracts attention
and is easy to sell
Taking design cues from CandleBudz' dispensary and
cannabis flower brand partners, the brand employs
authentically bold visual branding, from the bright orange
used in the Sherbinskis Acai Berry Gelato candle to the
strong shapes and logo treatment used in the Josh D
candle labeling and packaging. The candles not only deliver
ravishing aesthetics for end customers, they also are easy to
merchandise for CandleBudz' retail customers thanks to the
package's structural design.
"When I worked for the finger skateboard company Tech
Deck, the owner of that company would do these amazing
discovery meetings," Jordan recalls. "I remember during one
of these meetings, he said 'Bryan, look at the Rubik's Cube.
It's colorful, beautiful and merchandises so well that you can
look at the product and know that this is a candy store or a
toy store.' Twenty years later, I still remember that lesson in
how the Rubik's Cube brands well and is also very stackable,
and I'm using that insight to develop candle products." Because the packaging works so well in the retail environment,
Jordan says, retailers simply can stack two, four or six next to
the cash registers versus demanding brands buy shelf space
for products in other packaging formats such as clamshells.
Prepping for growth
The week of Jordan's interview with BXP, he was not only
buying several thousand dollars' worth of equipment, he was
also setting up CandleBudz' new warehouse. "We made about
$30,000 in sales the first weekend," Jordan reports. "Not bad
for a brand and a go-to-market strategy that was created as
a result of when this frickin' COVID thing hit. When my other
brands' retail business died off, I had to retool how I sell for
this new online, digital approach. At first, CandleBudz was
something to do while we were dealing with the negative
repercussions of COVID's effect on retail. This new brand's
sales are already surpassing our other candle brands'
business. I don't know if that will continue in the long run, but
I do know that this [pivot] is exciting, fun and profitable." ◆
