character to each destination—whether a mural-sized rectangle that covers an entire wall in the corridor or a narrow, elongated oval that glows within a blue LED frame in the restroom. Color helps carry through the design prerequisite of blurring the inside and outside. Although the intense green may be off the spectrum for Zen interiors, it matches up well with the fertile land around this fourstar resort. The navy used for the molded plaster ceilings with their twinkling LED stars and for the sparkling glass doors mirrors the night sky, while the lighter blue of much of the lighting and accents, such as the egg-shaped tea table in the relaxation room, brighten spaces with a daytime feel. Pristine white is the dominant pigment for the walls, floors and free-form ceiling details. While that bucks the trend toward dark, womb-like spas, it suggests an airiness that’s right for a retreat in this mountaintop town. “This spa’s visual environments connect external reality with the inner world. As architects, we feel we need to ‘sniff out’ what’s unique about a locale and shape that into concrete, interior experiences,” says studio founder Simone Micheli. “The Italian city of Ariano Irpino, where the hotel is located, is at a crossroads, both geographically and in terms of its transition from a historic past to more diverse future. We express that in contrasts like the intense colors paired with soft lighting or the organic curves of the furniture executed in harder-edged materials.” Like a sense of place, the Incontro’s spa respects the mandate for sustainability. Micheli chose the floor as one platform for his eco-conscious message. “I was looking to show a new level of dignity and value for a material made of earth,” he says.
