A
s sustainable design develops as a mature criteria for packaging, it’s facing more critical evaluation by consumers, brands and governments. No longer is it good enough just to say that a material is lightweight, biobased, recyclable or reusable. End consumers and the CPGs and governments that serve them often demand that packages meet two or more of these criteria before they can be called green. Brands such as Jade Monk (page 16) are responding by designing packages that meet multiple criteria and even take into account the sustainability of its partner-suppliers. The pouches are made by Overnight Labels, which was an early leader in energy conversation and the reduction of solid waste in the label and package printing industry. These paper-based pouches are housed in 100% recyclable cartons made by Johnson Printing and Packaging using wind power. Finding partners with the same corporate social responsibility (CSR) philosophy as your brand is also an essential theme in Aveda’s presentation during our Sustainable Package Development and Design webinar being held Wednesday, November 14 at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT. Nicole Call, Aveda’s industrial engineer and manager of package development, and Jason Troutman, director of packaging design, use a blend of science and art to create luxury packaging that doesn’t come with a high environmental cost. It was this wide berth of knowledge that enabled the pair to persuade suppliers to produce eco-friendly packaging materials. Sometimes it takes more than persuasion. During the same webinar, Ronald Sasine, senior director of packaging for private brand foods and consumables at Walmart, plans to update the package design community on Walmart’s newest sustainable goals and what the retailer expects from CPGs to meet these aggressive goals.
