tage where floor-standing features filled with wellpriced or seasonal products are promoted in wide
aisles. (The retailer had experimented with different strategies in terms of store layout and function,
but found its consumers looked to Walmart for the
kinds of goods traditionally found in its action alley
format.) “We work on pallet efficiency,” Sasine says,
“so that when a feature comes in, we’re analyzing
the number of items that fit into a standard-size
display pallet and making it as efficient as possible.”
Should a CPG provide a pallet with too much corrugated cardboard or more air than product, Sasine
guides that brand in understanding that while it’s
important to have a marketing presence in those
display features, efficiency is more critical. “Any
time we can make a package more efficient, we can
make a case more efficient,” he says. “Every case
that’s more efficient, makes for a more efficient pallet. And every pallet that’s more efficient means we
can load our trucks better. And every time we load
our trucks better—and we’ve got the data to show
that we are loading our trucks better—we’re saving
on transportation miles and diesel fuel costs.”

Scoring sustainability
As retailers downsize on packaging materials and
emphasize efficiency, sustainability becomes more
of a positive aftereffect. “There isn’t one driving
force [for efficient packaging],” says Ostrowski.
“They all play into each other, meaning we have the
request from the business team to make the packaging cheaper and from the retail side to make it
simpler. Both of those changes in turn make the
sustainability team happy.” PD
