Exploring Inspiration

T

his issue, we bring you insights from a wide range of branding, design and marketing
experts, including a vice president of marketing, director of new brands, global creative
director, art director, and corporate identity and design manager, from companies as
diverse as Kohler, Beam Suntory, Kimberly-Clark, The Fresh Market, Method Products, Osram
Sylvania and more.
Andrew Gillespie, vice-president and global creative director at A.T. Cross, shares what
inspires him from fine art to international travel. As part of our ongoing Design Matters Series,
Gillespie tells the story behind the Reebok Travel Trainer product and packaging concept. (I
prefer Gillespie's nickname for the product-ninja shoe!) Read more about the role Gillespie's
international travels played in the innovation in "Rising to the Challenge" on pages 14 to 22.
This year, our Makeover Challenge, sponsored by FiberMark North America, goes
international. The competitors' concepts will be showcased at Luxe Pack Monaco, where
attendees to the luxury packaging show, for the first time, can see actual prototypes of the
redesign concepts for premium beauty brand Kelley Quan New York. Learn more about the

If you can't jet off to the Riviera to view the concepts, you can learn about the strategies and
check out the designs in the August issue of Package Design or view and vote in person at Pack
Expo International, November 2 to 5, in Chicago. Be sure to take our next issue with you to Pack
Expo.
The next issue will be jammed packed with designs from association contests around the
world. These prizewinning designs will be on display at the Showcase of Packaging Innovation at
Pack Expo International, which spotlights competition winners from the Brazilian Packaging
Association, World Packaging Organization, Foil and Specialty Effects Association, Instituto
Argentino del Envase, Asociacion Mexicana de Envase y
Embalaje and more.
Our Annual Awards issue will detail these designs and
the collaboration behind them, with most winners sharing
the actual company names of the partner-suppliers that
executed the designs. Regular subscribers will be sent either
their printed or digital editions; colleagues who are not yet
