I

t's more than a tagline. It's the North Star for developing our inaugural conference, Package
Design Matters, happening in sunny Naples, FL, in January.
The Package Design Matters Conference was created as result of multiple conversations
with design leaders such as Kraft head of design Peter Borowski and Abbott group manager,
package innovation and core technology, James Perry. They and countless other design leaders
helped us realize that the industry needed a personalized, relevant conference experience that
delivered actionable content and, most importantly, more opportunities for networking with peers.
And I'm appreciative that so many leaders, representing multiple CPG verticals, not only
wanted to be part of the community gathering but also wanted to be part of the educational
program focused on collaboration, including John Walther, global brand design director at
Kimberly-Clark Worldwide; Ronald Burrage, senior director, global head of design at The Hershey
Company; Joel Kashuba, design director at SC Johnson; Chris Cunningham, global industrial
design manager at Wrigley; Tim Hankins, director of design at The Honest Company; Jon
Denham, vice president, brand design at ConAgra Foods; and many more. Several of these
thought-leaders will be serving on interactive panel discussions, where the audience will be
encouraged to participate and ask questions on controversial topics, such as what "if packaging
was your only marketing spend?"
Our advisors also stressed the importance of fun events that allow creatives to celebrate
design culture and network. To this aim, we chose a beautiful resort location and stimulating
activities such as an air-boat tour of the Everglades, where attendees will traverse the Barron
River and curving Mangrove tunnels, to end at swampy grasslands where alligators love to sun.
During the Eco Tour, you will also have an opportunity to
take a guided walk through The Fakahatchee Strand State
Preserve, the setting for the book The Orchid Thief and the
movie Adaptation.. The tour is designed to not only deliver
a thrilling opportunity to learn more about a rich and
varied habitat, but also an opportunity to expand your
professional circle.
On the subject of opportunity, a flight to Florida is an
excellent time to do some industry reading, including
learning about the winning concept for the 2014
Makeover Challenge, sponsored by FiberMark
North America. Turn to page 38 to learn more

winning team.
