A Night to Celebrate Inaugural Awards Gala recognizes the best people and work in the design industry. T his January, Package Design announced the winners of the inaugural Brand Leaders & Rising Stars Competition during the 2016 Package Design Matters Conference Celebration of Design Dinner and Awards Gala. Ten individuals and two collaborative teams were recognized for their efforts in elevating design's strategic role in the marketing mix. These recipients represented some of the industry's best marketing, branding and design leaders and up-and-coming future leaders. Winners were honored in the following categories: DESIGN Amanda Bach, senior package design manager, Nestle, USA Mauro Porcini, chief design officer, PepsiCo MARKETING AND BRANDING Christopher Gavigan, co-founder and chief products officer, Honest Company Lauren Fleischer, brand manager, global ecommerce at Mondele-z International INNOVATION Gina Bazigian, senior innovations manager, Anheuser-Busch InBev Tracie Wilson, manager, packaging innovation, McCormick & Company Inc. BUSINESS LEADERS Jennifer Bacon, co-founder, brand development and innovation lead, FlapJacked Andrew Libman, president, The Libman Company Christopher Gavigan, co-founder and chief products officer, Honest Company BEST COLLABORATIVE TEAMS Fuseneo + The Wonderful Company Brent Lindberg, principal and founder/design chief, Fuseneo, accepting. L'Oréal USA Sam Cheow, chief product accelerator, accepting. Award winners were nominated by peers, colleagues, superiors and partners, and were selected by an esteemed collection of branding, design and marketing experts. Recipients of the PAC Global Leadership Awards were also recognized during the gala. Included in the gala program, representatives from the Design Business Association (DBA) spoke to the audience about its Design Effectiveness Awards and the importance of viewing design as an investment, not a cost. For the first-time ever, the winning team for Package Design's Makeover Challenge, sponsored by Neenah and co-sponsored by Caps57, was recognized at an awards Gala, with the BrandFirst team accepting for their 2015 win for the blue-sky re-imagining of Microsoft Lumia 435 phone offered by TELUS Communications Company. TELUS was not at the ceremony, but Package Design thanks the brand for all the time and effort put into this academic exercise that puts real-world parameters around a blue-sky project. The 2015 Brand Leaders & Rising Stars award winners will be featured in the March 2016 issue of Package Design magazine and in a special edition webcast airing on Thursday, March 3.
