Matthews Intl. Plaque Commemorates Chesney Performance
News for a broader perspective
Since its 2001 opening, Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field has served as the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the team’s bellicose fans have gained a reputation as among the most hard-nosed in football (you’d expect nothing less from the Steel City). The 65,000-plus-seat stadium also serves as a venue for major concerts, and one of the top headliners to play there has been country superstar Kenny Chesney, whose chart-topping hits, such as “The Good Stuff” and “How Forever Feels”, have brought legions of concertgoers to their feet. His June 30 performance at Heinz Field marked the sixth time Chesney has played there; all six performances have been sellouts. Josh Rooney, a member of the Rooney family – which founded and still runs the Steelers – who serves as sales and marketing director for architectural-sign fabricator Matthews Intl.’s (Pittsburgh) sports and entertainment division, connected Chesney’s six sellout Heinz Field concerts and the Steelers’ six Super Bowl championships. At Josh’s suggestion, Art Rooney II, the founder’s son and the Steelers’ current president and owner, commissioned the plaque.

Matthews fabricated the convex, 30.5 x 37.5-in. plaque from Matthews’ ImageCast aluminum material. The company’s plant on West Liberty Ave. sanded, forged and painted the plaque. The plaque was revealed and presented to Chesney shortly before he performed the “Boys of Fall”, a tribute to high-school football and the passion the sport engenders. He was clearly touched by the tribute; he replied, “This might be the best gift I’ve ever received on the road. It epitomizes all the heart, energy and passion that this crowd has, and this town has.” Josh said Chesney will hang his plaque in his Nashville home’s workout room, where the singer said it will inspire him every day. A duplicate “Six for Six” plaque will be installed at Heinz Field.
