The City of New Orleans, a passenger train (and the subject of Arlo Guthrie’s legendary song), has run nightly from Chicago to New Orleans since 1947; Amtrak has operated the train since its 1971inception. Tracks that carry both passenger and freight trains split Arcola’s downtown, so trains are an essential part of town life. Rob Estes, owner of Brushstroke Signs (Paducah, KY), captained this mural’s painting. Otto Real Estate sponsored the mural.
In 1935, Arcola’s Chamber of Commerce staged a “Homecoming,” which featured circus performers and various theatrical groups. However, the event’s marquee attraction was Ozzie Nelson and His Orchestra – the group had a chart-topping hit, “And Then Some,” at the time – and their lead vocalist, Harriet Hilliard (Ozzie and Harriet married a few months after the show and later became the iconic couple of TV’s Golden Age). Nancy Bennett, a Centerville, IA-based signmaker and artist, led the production of the mural, and Consolidated Communications, a multi-state, telecommunications provider, sponsored the project. This mural, designed by A Router Works Signs’ (Pensacola, FL) Aaron Taylor and Vital Signs LLC’s (Thomasville, GA) Chris Lovelady, bedecks the Arcola Center on U.S. 45 downtown. It honors Pat Murphy, a cantankerous, but generous, gent who ran Murphy’s Garage from the 1930s through the 1970s or early ‘80s. He also served as a bombardier during World War I, and, as a riding mechanic, he drove in the Indianapolis 500 during the 1920s. Good’s Body Shop, which has operated in Arcola for more than two decades, sponsored the mural. Arcola was known as the “broom corn capital of the world” (broom corn is a sorghum-like plant with fibrous blooms traditionally used to make brooms and brushes), and this mural celebrates the plant’s sweeping legacy. Although broom corn is no longer widely grown in Arcola, it planted the seeds for the Libman Co., an Arcola-based entity that has produced mops and other cleaning products for more than 110 years. Michael Clark, an Aledo, IL-based signmaker, designed the mural. Rankin Publishing, an Arcola company that provides trade magazines, sponsored the mural.
