Signs of the Times - November 2012 - (Page 56)

This time, we take pictures. By Jeff Russ and Barry Allen London 2012 The first time London held theWe lackedgames, 1908, this Olympic magazine was two years old. the time (three weeks each way by steamer ship) and resources to properly document the signs and sign technologies of that event. This time, we didn’t make that mistake. Athens, GA-based photographer Barry Allen would already be in London. So we added a mission: document the signs, and the times, of the London games. As he has done several times, Barry captured the spirit of the city, and created a wonderful gallery of Olymic signage. Barry’s images remind us that, every four years, the Summer Games serve as not just a bellwether of human athletic achievement, but a showcase of event architecture, public transport and signage technology. In this way, it’s interesting, and fun, to gauge how far the sign industry has come since the halcyon days of carved letters, linen cloth and mahl sticks. I think this gallery reveals a goldmedal effort by all the signmakers involved. Enjoy. ■ 56 SIGNS OF THE TIMES / NOVEMBER 2012 /
