ST UPDATE By Steve Aust News for a broader perspective Displays Capture Inauguration Day Whatever political beliefs people hold, they (hopefully) put them aside on Inauguration Day to enjoy the pomp and circumstance and appreciate that we live in a democracy that enjoys seamless transfers (or, in the case of reelections, retention) of power. In positive news reports, lawmakers from both parties avoided typical partisan rancor for more conciliatory tones that reflect simple enjoyment of the day’s majestic events. Approximately one million people congregated on and around Washington, D.C.’s National Mall to witness the dawn of President Barack Obama’s second term (the number pales in comparison to the 1.8 million who witnessed the beginning of his first term in January 2009, according to politico.com, but still a huge aggregation of humanity). Although only a fortunate few could see the President’s face up close as Supreme Court Chief 6 SIGNS OF THE TIMES / MARCH 2013 / www.signweb.com Justice John Roberts swore him in, many more could view him, and the power brokers and celebrities behind him, during the proceedings, thanks to five colossal, LED electronic-display signs (EDS) perched from prominent vantage points within the National Mall. GoVision, an Argyle, TX-based, modular-EDS provider, whose installations have appeared at such high-profile events as the NCAA Final Four, Ryder Cup and NBA All-Star Game, assembled the screens. The largest of the five, truck-mounted units, which the company calls its “GoBigger” system, measures 19 x 33 ft.; it and a companion, 17 x 27-ft. display were situated on either side of the Capitol steps. Three additional, 9 x 16-ft. screens were installed at the top of the National Mall to provide faraway onlookers with a better vantage point. The screens were built with Daktronics PST-12HD tiles. The 3 x 4-ft. tiles provide 7,500-nit brightness and a viewing range of 18 to 1,900 ft. “Live events don’t get much bigger, or more visible, than a Presidential inauguration,” Chris Curtis, GoVision’s CEO, said. “It’s an honor to get invited back for an event of this magnitude. We worked on the project for more than a year with the Joint Congressional Inauguration Committee.” CNN also hired the company to construct a 10 x 17-ft., LED video wall for the news network’s live-broadcast set. The display was integrated into the stage, which was installed at the intersection of 12th St. and the National Mall. This display entailed Panasonic 8mm panels. Rounding out the company’s Inauguration activity, it also assembled two, 9 x 12-ft. GoTron (the company’s customized adaptations of Barco B10 displays) LED units for a watching party at the Canadian embassy in downtown Washington. http://www.politico.com http://www.signweb.com
