Sign/Printmakers Guild Arlon (Santa Ana, CA) has promoted Lisandra Torres to logistics coordinator. She is now responsible for the logistics of Arlon’s products, customer delivery, Torres freight vendor and outside warehouse management. Previously, Torres was the customer service representative focused on Asia and Australia. Mutoh America Inc. (Phoenix) has become a platinum sponsor of the Intl. Sign & Printmakers Guild, a member-led organization designed to help sign and print providers grow their businesses and reduce costs. The guild’s goal is to expand the universe of wide-format business. Mutoh joins Arlon and SAi as platinum sponsors, the highest sponsorship level. The guild currently has nine silver sponsors as well, including ST and The Big Picture magazine. Sponsorship allows sign companies to become members free of charge. The guild will send its members new customers through the new Sign.com website that sells custom signage and banners to the general public. The guild website is www.signprintguild.org. Roland Expands Manufacturing With Bangkok, Thailand Facility Roland DG Corp. (Hamamatsu, Japan), parent company of Roland DGA Corp. (Irvine, CA), has opened a new manufacturing facility in Bangkok, Thailand, specifically for digital- printing equipment. The company’s first manufacturing plant outside of Japan, the new production center is expected to greatly strengthen the company’s manufacturing capabilities. Roland will benefit from better procurement capabilities, lower operating costs, and increased pricing competitiveness. The company will also reduce its exposure to natural events that can occur regionally without warning, such as the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that impacted so many Japanese companies and their local supply chains. Seiko and ND Graphics Form Canadian Partnership Seiko Instruments USA, Inc. (Escondido, CA) and ND Graphics Inc. (Concord, ON, Canada) have agreed to work collaboratively to deliver professional printing solutions to the Canadian digitalprint and signage industries. Seiko is best known for its ColorPainter series of digital printers. ND is a major Canadian distributor. Similarly, ND has been named a Canadian master distributor by Fibermark (West Springfield, MA), a manufacturer of digital-printing media, with an emphasis on sustainable, green materials. SEGD Announces International Board The Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD), Washington, DC, has appointed six new members to its international board of directors, including its first board member from Australia. In Memoriam Dan O’Leary (1923-2012) Dan O’Leary, who secured contracts for 16 of the 20 biggest Las Vegas spectaculars from 1964-1977 for Ad-Art (headquartered in Stockton, CA), died December 11, 2012. His pylon sign for the Stardust Hotel-Casino (the October 1968 ST cover) won Guinness Book of World Records recognition for being the world’s tallest electric sign. Lou Papais purchased Ad-Art in July 1958, and he convinced Dan to join him half a year later. The company reports that Dan’s first 30 sales proposals produced sales. Within a year, Dan became a partner and assumed the role of sales director. As the company expanded to have as many as six branches, Dan oversaw a sales force of up to 40 people. His Las Vegas spectaculars began in 1962 with the Thunderbird Hotel & Casino for Del Webb. Notable projects to follow included the Caesar’s marquee, record-breaking heights for signs for the Frontier and Stardust casinos, and later the International (now the LV Hotel) and the MGM Grand. Dan suffered a heart attack in 1979, which slowed his Las Vegas activity. Dan was married for 44 years to the late Albina Rossi O’Leary. They had three children. Dan was married for the past 16 years to Beverly Ann O’Leary.
