INDUSTRY NEWS B y Wa d e S w o r m s t e d t Wade Swormstedt is the publisher/editor of Signs of the Times magazine, celebrating his 30th year on staff. Roy Flahive Named CSA Executive Director The California Sign Assn. (CSA) has named Roy Flahive its new executive director, following a threemonth-long, statewide search. Flahive served CSA twice before as its president, during his 40+ years in the sign industry.  Flahive's extensive volunteer roles have included work with the San Diego mayor's Sign Code Task Force, the San Diego Area Lighting Advisory Board, the California State Contractors License Board, the Underwriters Laboratories' Industry Advisory Committee, the Intl. Sign Assn., World Sign Assoc. and the Western States Sign Council (WSSC). He recently led CSA in engaging the California Energy Commission and the California utility companies in their ongoing work on Title 24 regulations. Most recently, Flahive represented WSSC while on the CSA board, and in that capacity, helped to coordinate joint WSSC/ CSA initiatives. Autodesk Completes Delcam Acquisition Autodesk, Inc. (San Rafael, CA) completed its acquisition of Delcam (Birmingham, UK), a supplier of advanced computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software, on February 6. Delcam will operate as a wholly owned, independently operated subsidiary of Autodesk, with no significant changes planned for Delcam's business. Autodesk, Inc. provides 3D-design, engineering and entertainment software, and employs more than 7,300 people worldwide. Delcam has more than 30 offices worldwide and approximately 700 employees.   Top Value Fabrics Celebrates 40th Anniversary Top Value Fabrics (Carmel, IN) is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014. Founded in 1974, it supplies textiles for the print-media, industrial and activewear markets. The company became 100% employee owned through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) in 2010. MagX Names Rogers National Sales Manager ISA and SEGD Defeat "70%" ADA Rule A new standard, which would have required American with Disabilities Act (ADA) signage to have a visual contrast of 70% between foreground and background, has been defeated, with the combined efforts of the Intl. Sign Assn. (ISA) and the Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD). ISA states, "The mandate would have created tremendous difficulties in enforcement without any proof that it would benefit those it was designed to assist." ISA participated in the process for developing the American National Standard Institute's (ANSI) 2014 Edition of the Model Code for Accessible and Usable Buildings Facilities. The ANSI standards are used in the International Building Code, which serves as the basis for the ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG). Therefore, ANSI codes carry significant impact. "We are in favor of developing a standard that manufacturers and code officials understand, support and comply with willingly," said Teresa Cox, president of APCO Sign Systems and an ISA member. Cox represented ISA in the ANSI process. "Site conditions, particularly the type and intensity of lighting, have great impact on perceived contrast. Following that formula without considering site conditions would allow combinations that do not have enough contrast, and prohibit others that are perfectly legible when appropriate lighting is provided." 86 SIGNS OF THE TIMES March 2014 MagX America (Cincinnati) has named Elizabeth Rogers its national sales manager. She holds both a bachelor's degree from John Carroll Univ. and a Juris Doctorate from Ohio Northern Univ. Along with extensive sales, marketing and promotional experience, Rogers has also practiced law in Cincinnati and been admitted to the Ohio Bar Assn. In addition to its corporate offices in Cincinnati, OH, MagX has three warehouse operations in California, Georgia and Ohio, and a converting and fabricating facility in Ohio. In addition, MagX has manufacturing and distribution facilities in China, Europe, Japan and Vietnam. Ultraflex Named G-Floor Master Distributor As of January 2014, Ultraflex Systems Inc. (Randolph, NJ) has become the exclusive master distributor for G-Floor Graphic Products in North America. The commercial-grade, vinyl-flooring product is customizable with solvent and UV digital and screenprinting. It allows second-surface printing (preferred for most G-Floor products) or first-surface printing.
