Well, if the mentioned hybrid is Mutoh's ValueJet 1617H, you'd be wrong. Mutoh's 64-in.-wide, 1,440-dpi, bio-ink printer is a multi-purpose, UV-alternative machine that offers the performance of a UV-cure hybrid at a fraction of the price. A hybrid printer can be a signshop workhorse, and this one, topped off with Mutoh's MP ink, provides wide-gamut imaging on such rigid Specifications: The Mutoh ValueJet 1617H printer Maximum Media Width 64 in. It also prints equally bright on roll media, for banners and vehicle wraps. Mutoh's bio-based MP ink shares many characteristics with UV-cure ink. The ValueJet 1617H prints CMYK, plus white MP ink, and the latter provides four interesting print choices: under-lay white (color on top), over-lay white (color on bottom), three layers (white sandwiched by color) and white only. Similar to UV-cure print systems, the ValueJet 1617H deposits ink on the media surface, which is then dried via an integrated, hot-air blower system. No media coating is required and, yes, the ink is flexible and stretchable, ready to wrap around any car or truck fender. The 1617H features automatic, printhead-height adjustment and accepts rigid media up to ½ in. thick that weighs up to 33 lbs., and rollstock media that weighs up to 66 lbs. In addition, to ensure smooth processing, the printer features a rubber-wheeled, media-feed system. Options include an optional takeup table (roll-away) and a SpectroVue VM-10 spectrophotometer. Check it out. Mutoh says it's the most affordable hybrid printer on the market. ■
