color leaves bare eyes unable to
see the glass' shape - a problem for
every bender.
Yellow sodium light is practically monochromatic; that is, it
consists of only one major light
wavelength. A single wavelength
(or color) of light can be filtered
out of a spectrum rather easily
by a matched filter. Sodium-light
filters can be made out of glass colored by adding rare-earth elements
neodymium and praseodymium.
The mix is often called didymium.
When such glass is used for
safety-glass lenses, the yellowsodium flare light is blocked, but
other color vision is only barely
affected (Photo 4). The glassbender
can precisely observe the glass
heating in the flame without a
yellow flare's disruption.
Beside protection against the
yellow light, wearing safety glasses
while bending protects eyes further
against particles in case glass shatters and parts start flying.
Eyewear particulars
One problem with didymium-filter
glasses is that the red-hot, glowing
glass all looks the same. For example,
when splicing different (classic)
colors of glass together, the different colors appear indistinguishable in the flame. Here, some
safety-eyewear manufacturers
have "color-enhanced" glasses
with additional filters so colors
look different when red-hot.
Some specialized eye-protection
filters are available. One is infrared
protection, which prevents heat
radiation from the glass, fires or
furnace from reaching the eye.
This protection prevents a common
glasswork disorder, conjunctivitis,
wherein the radiated heat causes
slow, irreversible coagulation of
the albumin in the eyeball over
time, and may lead to blindness.
Further, the infrared-blocking feature also prevents eyes from drying
out, a feature I really like.
Enhanced infrared protection is
achieved in two different ways:
infrared absorption or reflection.
For reflection, the lenses' front
surfaces are coated with a thin
gold film so the heat is reflected.
Some wearers like the mirroring
effect; others don't. The thin coating, even when multiple coats are
applied, is quite fragile in daily
use, and is sensitive to scratches
and sweaty fingerprints.
Thus, I prefer infrared absorption.
