Air Zoo Floor Graphics
More than "Buy Tide" signs, floor graphics can change
and enchant an environment, such as shown at the
Air Zoo museum, which is located at 6151 Portage
Road in Portage, MI (halfway between Detroit and

brings together architecture, interior design, environmental graphic
design, print graphics, electronics
and digital media, lighting, audio,
mechanical interactives and other

Chicago). Air Zoo is a Smithsonian-affiliated aerospace and science museum that features more than
100 rare and unique aircraft, spacecraft, interactive
exhibits, full-motion flight simulators, indoor amusement park rides, a 4-D theater and hands-on, sciencebased camps and classes. It features multiple wall
and floor graphics, plus several large, hand-painted
murals. The floor graphic depicts a walk through
flower-laden fields of France, a World War II airbase,
the deck of the USS Kitty Hawk and a walk in space.
Originally painted by Kalamazoo artist Sy Ellens
on Masonite boards, the graphics were digitally
photographed, enlarged and then re-imaged onto
vinyl through Agio Imaging's (Kalamazoo) patented
Floorpix™ process.
Another Air Zoo notable is the 800 x 32-ft. "Century
of Flight" wall mural painted by Rick Herter and Tony
Hendrick over a 14-month period. It traces aviation
history from the first hot air balloon to modern space
flight. The 28,000 sq. ft. mural required 400 gallons
of paint.

Easy rider
All graphics are visuals applied to
various surfaces and in different
sizes. The "Easy Rider" display is
a classic example - are the framed
posters wall graphics? Sure, because
any digital print provider can provide such vertical images. The
point is to suggest concepts, not
specific ideas and then work with
the client to produce a sellable product, regardless of the terminology.
Nail it
Ted Leonhardt, the author and
illustrator of "Nail It: Stories for
Designers on Negotiating with
Confidence," and an SEGD speaker,
says he helps creatives achieve
their potential through focused
negotiation. He says you should
think about negotiation as the
discovery phase of a project, but
recognize that the project is your
prospective client - the client
states what they need, you provide
a solution. He adds, however, that
your competitors can do the same.
In part, his advice is this:

the project;
Consider conducting a study to
determine specific design needs;
Suggest something unusual;
Explore the results of similar
projects that may have failed and
suggest workarounds;
Study the client deadline and
propose an earlier completion, to
match an upcoming event.
Leonhardt says creatives are more
empathetic than the average person and that complexity, coupled
with their emotional connection
to their work, amplifies their
personal discomfort and anxiety,
which makes them susceptible
to accepting low offers, i.e., "rolling over at the bargaining table."
To get around this, he said to
test your assumptions by asking
well-crafted questions that lead
your client to confirm what you
have assumed about the project.
This moves you to a cooperative
environment, one where you are
colleagues and not adversaries. He
also suggests you have your facts
at hand before the meeting and
rehearse your presentation and,
as well, have an alternative design
to suggest. n
