PATTERNED TO IMPRESS
Back in the business world, Barney
& Barney, an insurance agency, was
looking for a wall- and glass-covering
solution to brand the space of the
800-sq.-ft. reception area, adjacent
walls and conference rooms of its
Irvine, CA office. Barney & Barney's
design firm Ware Malcomb (Irvine, CA)
recommended their client partner
with Metropolitan West (MetWest;
Los Angeles), a firm deeply experienced
with vinyl coverings. The project
called for Type II commercial grade
wallcovering for 14 walls and customprinted decorative glass film for the
conference rooms.
"Our philosophy is to provide a
360° view of a project to ensure client
satisfaction," said Kelly Taylor, MetWest's
CEO, of her company's design services.
"With Barney & Barney, our concepting and design began with them
providing their logo for branding,
requesting that we create a design
for them that not only matched their
marketing communication, but [was
also] aesthetically pleasing and unique."
Once Barney & Barney approved

the patterned design, the production
and installation immediately followed.
"With this project, we not only finished
the design within the timeframe,"
Taylor said, "we also ensured that
final installation of wallcoverings
would be completed within one
day, a week from the final approval
with no disruption to the worksite."
MetWest produced a range of solarcontrol window film, interior graphics
and decorative glass films onsite to
keep up with this aggressive timetable.
FLOORED BY THEIR WALLS
MetWest used Korographics Abaco
Beach commercial grade wallcovering
and their own branded clear film for
the glass, printed on their Roland
LEJ-640 UV hybrid/flatbed printer.
"We ensured that all designs and
patterns when transitioning from
wallcovering to decorative glass
kept design scale and color match
to demonstrate consistency between
surfaces," Taylor said. This required
MetWest to print a portion in advance
as the first phase of the project was
the wallcovering, with the decorative
glass film to follow. "As both elements
were not to be created at the same
time, we had to account for which
printer and which ink would be
used," Taylor said.
Many factors can come into play
when there is a break in production
of printed goods, according to Taylor,
from variances in materials to the
printhead's performance. As a result,
"In mass production, such as retail
wallpaper," Taylor said, "there are
batch matching codes to ensure two
rolls are alike. With custom printing
on different surfaces, we need to be
diligent to ensure that all final productions are the same.
"In this case, we did spend longer
finalizing the design to ensure the
client was happy, which resulted
in some schedule shuffling to have
installers on site one week from
approval - but nothing out of the
ordinary," Taylor said. MetWest
regularly employs installers around
the clock to work with their clients'
scheduling requirements. Barney &
Barney was no different; MetWest
installers knocked out the coverings
in one day. That's not to say there
weren't specific challenges to overcome. "With a design such as this, as
it is geometric and not organic, any
slight mistake can show up easily,"
Taylor said. MetWest's installation
team used a laser line tool to ensure
the pattern orientation was perfect
during the installation process. "Just
a single degree off cannot be seen
when nose to nose while installing,"
Taylor said, but "a line tool ... ensures
that not only are lines straight, but that
the angle is absolute and accurate."
Barney & Barney was so pleased
with their new surroundings that
they asked MetWest to decorate
their granite flooring and walls with
film, too. With no surface too "hard"
- not even granite - MetWest has it
covered.
