Attaching the letter backs to the flanged returns.
The letters, already mounted on the raceway, are
carefully packed and ready to ship.
The raceway color specification was
SW 6108 Latte. We used SherwinWilliams Genesis LV, a low-VOC
urethane coating with a chemical/
solvent resistant finish, ideal for the
conditions this sign would endure.
Next, a 60W Optodriver power
supply was placed in each raceway.
The raceway structure also received
electrical and grounding wires along
with a disconnect switch. (As a side
note, one advantage of racewaymounted channel letters is easy wiring
accessibility simply by removing
the lid.)
TRIM CAP AND RETURN BENDING
The next step was bending and attaching the channel letter trim caps, the
plastic molding that affixes the acrylic
faces to the letter returns. This project
specified a standard prefinished black
trim cap. An SDS trim cap machine
notches the caps which are then
permanently attached using Weld-On
#3 and #16 adhesives.
With those sign components completed, we constructed the returns
(or sides) of the channel letters from
5-in. aluminum, the industry's standard
dimension. Like some of the other
channel letter elements, return coil
offers a standard pre-finished color
Kerley Signs installed the three-part, channel letter/logo box sign with no
trouble. Now let's eat!
set; this sign specified a standard
black. The bottom of the returns were
notched and flanged so the letter
backs could be securely attached.
ATTACHING AND LIGHTING
We attached the letter backs, then
mounted the channel letters to the
raceways prior to shipment. This
pre-mounting simplifies the sign
installation. Next we populated the
insides of the letters with LED modules,
carefully positioned and mapped
into a diagram prior to placement.
The sign letters received a single LED
stroke, and the logo box, a grid LED
configuration.
Finally, we attached the acrylic faces
to the letters and logo box and performed a final quality-control check.
Letter illumination, placement, kerning
and other features were reviewed
and evaluated prior to packaging and
shipping to Kerley Signs.
So, when in Rome, as they say, do
as the Romans do. And when you
sell and design a channel letter sign,
do as most companies do: Order the
letters wholesale. Now, with a little
better insight.
