Mimaki has long been known for bringing
innovative technology to market. How
does the concept of innovation fit into the
company's culture?
A: Mimaki offers such a wide range of
products and technologies, it feels natural
to combine them, to bring them together
in unique and creative ways. We also look
to see what other technologies are
complementary to ours, and aim to match
them in ways that help our customers be
more successful. Matching UV LED flatbed
inkjet printers with laser cutters and CNC
machines is a great example: CNC
machines can create a printing jig, and
laser etching after printing can provide a
unique system without extraordinary
investment. This type of workflow is borne
of Mimaki's drive to innovate.
What are some of the innovations behind
the technologies that Mimaki has
introduced over the past few years?
A: The new 3DUJ-553 full-color 3D printer
is an excellent example of Mimaki driving
innovation by harnessing our expertise in

the traditional 2D printing market and
applying it to the 3D printing world. We
were able to leverage our experience with
highly accurate dot placement and
ICC-compliant color workflows to take
color 3D printing to a level not yet
achieved in the current marketplace.
Designers can now create a 3D model on
screen and soft proof it by using custom
ICC profiles created with Mimaki software,
to preview a color-accurate rendering of
the final output before printing begins.
This gives designers the freedom to focus
on the model and have confidence that
the final output will match what they see
on the screen.
The transitional-view print technology
on the UCJV300 UV LED roll-to-roll
printer has previously only been seen on
more expensive machines. By creating
four layers of color and light masking,
and using the layering tools in RasterLink6 software, users can output a visually
dynamic print that changes not only color,
but mood and content by cycling the
light source from front to back. For POP
and display graphic applications, the
UCJV300 printer is an exceptional
machine that is unparalleled in its abilities
and value to the user.
The dual-ink capability on the TX300P
Series printers enables two different ink sets
to be loaded in the same printer. This gives
users the ability to print on natural material
with textile pigment inks or on polyester
material with sublimation dye inks using
only one printer. This system offers a very

flexible workflow and is ideal for dynamic
production of a wide variety of goods.
How important is it, in today's print
climate, for your customers to prioritize
innovation in their businesses?
A: It is critical for customers to innovate
to remain competitive and profitable,
particularly for smaller companies that
must compete against larger companies
that can leverage the economies of scale.
The ability to be first to capture a niche
market, and do it in a profitable way, will
depend heavily on thinking and acting in
innovative ways to produce and deliver
goods and services with maximum results
and minimum waste.
Take the maker movement, for
example. Many makers are driven by their
passion to create, and the ability to profit
from the output is often secondary. Their
drive to deliver goods that solve a
problem or fill a need is often done on a
small budget, which requires them to be
not only innovative but also creative and
clever with the tools they currently have or
can inexpensively obtain. This is a unique
perspective that many larger companies
may not have. Makers are also keenly
aware of waste and inventory which, for
them, must be kept to an absolute
minimum in order to be profitable. This is
the key for a just-in-time workflow that will
enable smaller companies to be both
flexible and focused on the products that
are selling in any given market at any time.
