Downtown restaurants – urban, trendy, hip and exciting – are becoming all the rage.
Urban life is booming in North America’s major cities, which are devoting resources to building stronger, more vibrant inner cores. Downtowns are filling up with residencies, retail and hospitality. The bar and restaurant scene is particularly thriving. New, trendy restaurants bustle with downtown workers at lunch, cocktail hour habitués after work, the young hipster community later at night and suburbanites driving in for weekend dinner. But people are not looking for the “same-old same old,” according to Long Beach, Calif., designer Megan Tagliaferri. “They’re searching for more boutique one-of-a-kind choices to spend their time at,” says the proprietor of Flo Design. “They work hard and when they go out they want to have fun, an experience. Anyone who can create that experience – a luxury wonderland that feels opulent – will succeed.” But the “experience” can be a peculiar mix. So Ginza, a new Japanese restaurant in the New York area, opens shop in suburban Long Island but with a vibe that suggests the bustle and sophistication of downtown Tokyo. And Industriel opens in downtown Los Angeles but with a vibe that suggests the farmland and countryside of French Provence. And Scarpetta squeezes into a tiny outdoor pavilion with 40 tables and views of the Toronto skyline. Anything seems to go as long as the environment is memorable and, as Tagliaferri says, hip urbanites tell one another, “Hey, you’ve got to see this amazing place. It’s cool and creative.” Oh yeah, and the food’s good, too.
