Stacie White knows most people can’t lunge like an NFL player or strike a perfect tree pose in yoga class; that’s the point. As Fusion Specialties’ creative director, she tackles custom mannequin designs for clients whose shoppers aspire to the sweat-worthy goals these moves suggest, whether or not they can twist themselves into the lotus position. With a background in industrial design, White draws inspiration from furniture, architecture and the way shoppers’ minds work. “I’ve always had a huge interest in psychology,” she says. “For me, it’s not only about talking to our clients, but going out and understanding their customers, their demographic and what drives people.” Her most recent work plays to a surge in demand for ultra-active mannequins. Designing yoga mannequins for Lucy, an activewear retailer, White found inspiration in Boulder, not far from Fusion’s Broomfield, Colo., headquarters. “I was looking at yoga classes and websites, studying the poses to figure out what would be eye-catching, interesting and, honestly, inspirational because not many people, no matter how long they’ve been doing yoga, could do that pose,” she says of the dancer pose mannequin (shown at left). But requests for mannequins that move and twist aren’t reserved for athletic retailers. When Guess needed mannequins for a new accessories boutique, White hired a model and filmed her movements using a 3-D body scanner. “We had her dance and do all sorts of fun, goofy things, pretending she was singing LUCY to a crowd of people and just being really fun and out there,” she says. White and her team turned the scans into stylized poses for the new line, adding a high-polish black finish for a product with a runway presence and fun, feminine energy. It seems that whether she’s inspired by sweat or sequins, White knows how to design mannequins that move us. —Robin Donovan
