Wide-eyed and cute as a button, my daughter, Sarah, took her first trek, from Florida to Washington, D.C., at the age of three months. “She’ll love it,” my wife, Anne, said— which she did. And so began an itinerary of travel that’s taken Sarah from our home in North Carolina to destinations all over the world: Greece, Italy, Portugal, Scotland and Spain, where she now lives on the fashionable island of Mallorca. Our younger daughter, Alice, is similarly peripatetic. No sooner had she graduated from high school than she took off for two weeks in Paris. She followed that up with a summer in Berkeley and a solo backpacking tour of Spain and Portugal, all before her 24th birthday.

You know you’ve done a good job of raising your children if they lead lives that you envy. So how did Anne and I inspire a love of travel in our daughters? Recently, I asked. “It was the places you and mom took us to walk, run, swim, wade and bask,” says Alice. “Exploring the wilderness on hikes and canoe trips really set us up for exploring the world at large,” adds Sarah. Growing up, they both tired of hearing me quote Nietzsche: “That which does not kill us can only make us stronger.” They now admit that point of view helped them to understand that traveling—and life in general—will not always be easy. Alice says travel also made her realize the pasture isn’t necessarily

greener on the other side of the fence—or the ocean. “At first I traveled to see if there was a better world somewhere,” she says. “I thought, ‘Perhaps I belong somewhere else.’” Later, she came to see that the world is what you make it. Sarah recalls that traveling to remote areas near Oaxaca, Mexico, at the age of 16 humbled her and made her appreciate her comparatively posh lifestyle. “I remember barefoot Indians carrying crafts and spices to market and little children selling Chiclets,” she says. Travel transforms us, they both agree. “You never know how travel will change you,” says Alice, “but you will always discover something new about yourself.”
