Simple Packing Tips

No one wants to spend a vacation nursing an aching back after lugging more
than 50 pounds of so-called “necessities.” Your heaviest, bulkiest items tend
to be clothes, shoes, books and electronic chargers. Five simple fixes will help
you shed a few pounds without sacrificing what you really need to tote.

One to wash,
one to wear &
one to spare.

Leave your heavy
hard-shell luggage
at home. Choose
a soft-sided,
super-lightweight
suitcase like those

the bag.

Think of Grandmother’s adage as
you coordinate
your clothing,
from socks to
shirts, picking only
three of each.
Pack in categories:
tops, bottoms,
socks and
undergarments.
Bring a small
bottle of laundry
detergent so you
can wash and
wear. Another tip:
Roll your clothes to
prevent wrinkling
and save space.

Take your
library. Skip
the books.
Shoes for
every outfit?
Don’t even
think about it.
Wear your heaviest
or clunkiest pair on
the plane. Choose
outfits that go with
one of three pairs,
including the ones
you wear en route.
Logic says to place
shoes in the
bottom of the
suitcase, but the
Transportation
Security Administration (TSA)
suggests packing
footwear on top of
other items for
easy screening.
