DEPARTURES
I take pride in my heritage. Like many Carolinians, I'm
of Scotch-Irish descent. I know I'm from the Douglas
clan and that my Scottish ancestors settled in County
Antrim in Northern Ireland. Which is why, when I
visited Scotland two years ago, I approached the
country with more than the usual excitement. On that
trip, I got to pay tribute to my ancestors who uprooted
themselves and faced the unknown to start a new life.
Now is a good time to put a trip to Scotland at the
top of your list. The country is hosting a yearlong
celebration in 2014 called the Homecoming, inviting
people from around the world with Scotch backgrounds to visit. Our story on page 9 may help you
make up your mind. But don't feel excluded if your
ancestors hail from elsewhere. The Scots welcome
everyone with open arms-and a dram of whisky.
Are you facing the annual dilemma: where to take

The year 2014 also marks the 70th anniversary of
