Mykonos & Santorini

blue waters, the Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini have lured travelers for decades. What

captures their imagination lies beyond the islands' beauty and abundant sunshine.
here's the enticing contrast of
cosmopolitan dining, high-end
boutiques and vibrant nightlife
set against the traditions of fishing
villages, blue-domed churches and
the wonders of ancient history.
Both Mykonos and Santorini are
part of the Cyclades, islands that
hold a significant spot in Greek
history and lore. The mythical lost
civilization of Atlantis is said to lie
in Santorini's crater, while Apollo,
the god of, among other things,
poetry and music, is said to have
been born on Delos, near Mykonos.
If the name Mykonos sounds
familiar it's because the island has
drawn celebrities and party crowds
since the 1950s when the international jet-set started docking their
yachts there, turning its charming
streets of cobblestones into a glitzy
place to be seen. In the 1960s
Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle
Onassis vacationed on Mykonos
and in the 1970s international
models and celebrities made the
island synonymous with glamor
and hedonism.
Today, Mykonos still has that
legendary party vibe, but it's
largely confined to the summer
months, a time when its narrow
labyrinth of streets, restaurants
and nightclubs are packed through
the night. If you avoid the peak
times, mid-July through August,
when most Europeans take their
vacations, you'll find a tranquil
place where the tap of donkey feet
on cobblestones may be the only
sound you hear. The best times to
avoid crowds and still enjoy fine
weather are mid-May through
June and September through
mid-October.
Whether arriving by plane or
ship your first stop will undoubtedly
be Hora, Mykonos' main town, set
on a lovely seaside harbor where
fishing boats and caiques - brightlypainted wooden vessels - are
picture-perfect.
Hora has managed to maintain
its traditional atmosphere despite
the tourist influx. All-white houses
in cube shapes draped in red, pink
and purple bougainvillea and
churches with their blue domes and
bell towers shine in the bright
sunlight along the maze of cobblestone streets. A large artist
