What is it like to be a mile high above sea level?
Turns out the rarified elevation is the perfect place
where urban chic meets Wild West history and a
passion for nature.
Denver, Co., is the capital of the state known for
outdoor pursuits, craft beer and laid-back attitudes.
The city is the perfect urban destination on its own,
or as a jump-off point for exploring Rocky Mountain
National Park just over an hour away.
What should be your first stop? Climb the steps
of the Colorado State Capitol to stand on the spot
that is 5,280 feet above sea level. Keep going higher
to enjoy a panoramic view of 200 named mountains
from the Capitol's rotunda.
No visit is complete without exploring downtown.
Whether you're looking for foodie delights, world
class art, Old West history or unique shopping, you'll
find it here. In the LoDo Historic District, warehouses
have been converted into more than 90 restaurants,
rooftop cafes, sports bars and brewpubs.
At Union Station, the 1914 train station has
been converted into a hip collection of shops and
eateries, including Snooze, where the lengthy lines
foreshadow the delectable breakfast options that are
legendary. Looking for a true Denver souvenir? Stroll
into Rockmount Ranch Wear, where the Western
snap-button shirt was invented.
Artwork of a different kind can be admired at the
Denver Art Museum. Masterpieces of the American
West are among a collection of 68,000 works of art
that can be explored in one of two very different
buildings. One looks like a fortress, the other, like a
jagged crystal.
Enjoy a Rocky Mountain high when you travel
outside of the city to conquer a 14er, a mountain
peak with an elevation of at least 14,000 ft. above
sea level (Colorado has 53 of them).
